Pictures of the exhibition 'Your Eyes Burn Like Wild Fire' curated by Jan Van Woensel. With work of students and alumni of the Jewellery Design department of St Lucas School of Arts Antwerp.
With the project GLUE/GLOSSY, students and lecturers of the Jewellery Department of St Lucas University College of Art & Design Antwerp wish to ensure that art jewellery occupies a more prominent place in our everyday lives. Pictures of jewellery designed by students were printed on stickers which were then used to dress up the men and women shown in magazines.
It emerges out of past research projects by the department that jewellery made by artists needs a lot of time to reach a wide audience. This contrasts with accessories designed by hip labels and is in fact virtually unavoidable when you consider that the media only show examples of classical and fashion jewellery. As young jewellery designers, we believe that repeated exposure to new ‘examples’ in the media will lead to greater awareness of art jewellery and will strongly influence its acceptance. Taking a playful approach, GLUE/GLOSSY aims to promote art jewellery as something natural to wear.
In 2012, the renowned Belgian interior-design biennial Interieur moved beyond the Kortrijk Xpo fairgrounds to the city’s Buda Island. Under the name of Interieur Extra, the avant-garde of contemporary creative design was given the chance to express itself through installations, pop-up presentations, exhibitions and workshops. In this setting, the St Lucas University College of Art and Design Antwerp, Jewellery Design | Silversmithing department, took part with the guerrilla action Glue/Glossy, as part of their research project ‘UnScene: Jewellery and Presentation’.

British contemporary jewellery artist Lin Cheung, a lecturer and teacher at Central Saint Martins (London), came to Antwerp to lead the workshop ‘ Without You I Am Nothing,’ intended for second and third year bachelor students. In brief, Lin Cheung’s work approach revolves around the social, cultural and personal bonds between jewellery pieces and their owners, and she visualises the hidden values perceived in jewellery. To communicate her findings, Lin Cheung searches for various platforms to present her artwork. This perspective relates to the research project ‘UnScene: Jewellery and Presentation,’ by the St Lucas University College of Art and Design Antwerp, Jewellery Design|Silversmithing department.
The ‘Confrontations’ lectures, organized by the St Lucas University College of Art and Design Antwerp, Jewellery Design|Silversmithing department, are held to support the department’s research project ‘UnScene: Jewellery and Presentation’. In this context, British contemporary jewellery artist Lin Cheung, a teacher at Central Saint Martins (London), was invited to hold her ‘Confrontations’ lecture ‘Everything you always wanted to know about jewellery, but were afraid to ask’ on 24 April 2012.
Within the framework of the BOF research program of Hilde Van der Heyden, researcher/teacher/tutor at the jewelry dept. of St Lucas University College of Art & Design, Antwerp, in cooperation with Staf Van Tendeloo of the EMAT research group of the University of Antwerp, into new bonding and connecting-applications and techniques of diamonds (in all their appearances, forms and shapes) to other products, metals, …etc., and the development of new approaches these techniques could offer to jewelry design and realization, a master class was organized.
A double lecture in the Confrontations series was organized on 16 February of this year by St Lucas University College of Art and Design Antwerp, Jewellery Design|Silversmithing department. Contemporary jewellery artist Liesbet Bussche introduced the guest speakers, Gemma Draper and Barbara Visser, and highlighted their specific relationship to presentation, connecting them to ‘UnScene: Jewellery and Presentation,’ a research project conducted by St Lucas University College of Art and Design Antwerp, Jewellery Design|Silversmithing department.
For this year’s masterclass week at Sint Lucas University College of Art and Design Antwerp, the renowned Dutch multi-disciplinary artist Barbara Visser was invited by Hilde De Decker to hold the three-day masterclass ‘Re-presentation’. Shortly stated, Barbara Visser’s line of work revolves around perception, the reconsideration of assumption, reflection on authorship and authenticity. This fits beautifully with the various viewpoints within the research project ‘UnScene. Jewellery and Presentation’, by the Sint Lucas University College of Art and Design Antwerp, Jewellery Design|Silversmithing department.
Spanish contemporary jewellery artist and guest teacher Gemma Draper, who works in Barcelona, came to Antwerp to lead the workshop ‘Present’, which relates to the research project ‘UnScene. Jewellery and Presentation’, by the St Lucas University College of Art and Design Antwerp, Jewellery Design|Silversmithing department. Jewellery professionals and third year bachelors were invited to take part.
The industrial setting of Object Rotterdam was host to ‘Der Schmuck Salon’, a travelling presentation of student work, set up by St Lucas University College of Art and Design Antwerp, Jewellery Design|Silversmithing department, as a part of their research project ‘UnScene’.
The ‘Confrontations’ lectures-series, organized by St Lucas University College of Art and Design Antwerp, are held to support their research project ‘Unscene’, which focuses on presentation in a variety of means. On April 6th 2011 Confrontations’ speaker Wesley Meuris, sculpture artist and researcher was joined by Hanna Hedman, jewelry artist.

"What you see displayed here is a visual and written document of our original walks. The objects displayed in this circle are some that were found on the walks, there is a map detailing our journeys, images remembered by the group in words remembered 11 days after the walks were taken and a selection of all our images in a line on the wall, beginning at this end where we began on Sint-Jozefstraat. The students have connected their individual projects to an image on the line of the place that they chose to go back to and reflect on. This project is a formative part of the jewellery students’ studies, whilst it does not explicitly connect with what we may think of as jewellery, it is intended to encourage thinking around ideas such as collecting data, research, mark-making, the identity of a place, individuals and place and how we experience place by being in it, on our feet".
On March 16th 2011 another lecture of the ‘Confrontations’ series was organized by St Lucas University College of Art and Design Antwerp. While the audience snacked away at their lunch, art historian Evelien Bracke introduced Helen Carnac, jewelry-maker, research professor, writer and curator, from London, U.K.
‘By using Antwerp as a point of reference and by mapping a particular journey, through writing, drawing, mark making, photography, collecting objects, charting local industries, the material of the place, its history and stories we will build a repository of making and thinking. These findings will be sifted, arranged and curated into a public presentation’
Contemporary jewelry artist, research professor and curator Helen Carnac, working and teaching in London, U.K., arrived at St Lucas University College of Art and Design Antwerp, jewelry design-goldsmithing department, to lead the second workshop of the week: ‘Marking Place…Antwerp 2011’. Third year bachelors were invited to take part in this (workshop).

At St. Lucas Antwerp, the first ‘Confrontations’ (lecture) of the semester started with an update of their research project ‘UnScene’. Art historian Evelien Bracke explained how this, theory- and practice, based research project fits into the curriculum of the students of St Lucas University College of Art and Design Antwerp.
